With the art project Black Sun Søren Solkær returns to the landscape of his childhood in Southern Denmark. Here he has photographed the large starling murmurations, that take place by the Wadden Sea. Following the migration routes of the starling (Sturnus vulgaris), his photographic investigation has furthermore taken him to Rome, the Netherlands, England and Catalonia.
Inspired by calligraphy and Japanese wood cuts, Søren has created this series of graphic images of the landscape and great flocks of starlings. The starlings move as one unified organism that vigorously opposes any outside threat. The graphic and organic shapes of the starling murmurations range from meditative to highly dramatic as they perform their incredible ballet about life and death.
